Few destinations in India capture the charm of a classic hill station quite like Ooty. Nestled at an altitude of 2,240 metres in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, Ooty welcomes travellers with cool weather, emerald tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, winding roads, colonial architecture, and breathtaking viewpoints. Whether you're planning a relaxing family holiday, a romantic honeymoon, a weekend getaway from Bengaluru or Chennai, or a memorable South India vacation, Ooty Tour Packages offer the perfect escape into nature.
Known officially as Udhagamandalam, Ooty has been one of India's favourite hill stations for over two centuries. Once established as a summer retreat during the British era, the town still retains its colonial elegance through charming cottages, historic churches, botanical gardens, and the iconic UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Top Attractions Covered in our Ooty Holiday Packages
Doddabetta Peak
At 2,637 metres, Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiri Hills and one of the finest viewpoints in South India. On clear days typically in the early morning before the mist builds — the panoramic view from the summit extends across the Nilgiri plateau in every direction, with the tea estates spread like a green blanket below and the distant plains of Tamil Nadu visible at the horizon. The Telescope House at the summit allows visitors to see specific landmarks in close-up. The approach road through the Doddabetta shola forest is beautiful and often excellent for endemic Nilgiri birds. We always time our Doddabetta visits for early morning to maximise clear sky probability.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Toy Train)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest mountain railway experiences in India, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway has been running between Mettupalayam and Ooty since 1908 — a 46 km rack-and-pinion journey that climbs 1,700 metres through 16 tunnels and across 250 bridges, passing through tea estates, forest, and Nilgiri villages. The steam locomotive that powers the steepest section (from Mettupalayam to Coonoor) is the last steam rack-and-pinion locomotive in regular service in Asia a working relic of Victorian engineering of extraordinary charm. Our packages include the Toy Train experience as a standard or optional inclusion depending on the package tier.
Ooty Botanical Gardens
Spread across 22 hectares on the slopes of Doddabetta, the Government Botanical Gardens were established in 1848 and house an extraordinary collection of over 1,000 plant species — including a fossilised tree believed to be 20 million years old, an Italian garden, a rose garden with over 150 varieties, and the famous glass house where the annual Flower Show (May) fills an enormous Victorian greenhouse with the finest blooms of the Nilgiri season. The gardens are beautifully maintained and are one of the finest botanical garden experiences in South India, with shaded walking paths, viewpoints, and the pervasive Nilgiri fragrance of eucalyptus and pine.
Ooty Lake
Built in 1824 by the collector John Sullivan, Ooty Lake is a 65-acre artificial lake surrounded by eucalyptus trees, gardens, and the pleasant promenade that forms the social heart of Ooty town. Boating on the lake — in paddle boats, rowing boats, and the iconic paddle steamers is one of Ooty's most beloved and most photographed experiences, and the view from the water of the surrounding hills and gardens is genuinely beautiful. The lakeside area is also excellent for a morning walk, with the mist still on the water and the gardens quiet.
Coonoor – The Second Nilgiri Hill Station
Twenty-seven kilometres from Ooty and 400 metres lower in altitude, Coonoor is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris smaller, quieter, and in many ways more charming than its more famous neighbour. The tea estates around Coonoor are among the finest in the Nilgiris, and a guided walk through a working plantation watching the pluckers at work, smelling the fresh-processed leaf at the factory, and tasting first and second flush Nilgiri tea at source is one of the finest tea experiences in South India. Sim's Park a beautifully maintained botanical garden with extraordinary rose varieties and the colonial-era architecture of the town's bungalows and churches add heritage depth to the visit.
Lamb's Rock & Dolphin's Nose
Two of Coonoor's finest viewpoints, accessible on a half-day excursion. Lamb's Rock offers a dramatic view over the Coimbatore plains far below on clear days, you can see the plains stretching to the horizon more than 1,500 metres beneath. Dolphin's Nose a projecting rock that extends over the valley like a natural balcony offers one of the finest views available anywhere in the Nilgiris, with the Catherine Falls visible as a white thread on the opposite hillside and the entire Coonoor valley spread below.
Mudumalai Tiger Reserve
At the foot of the Nilgiri Hills on their northwestern slope, approximately 64 km from Ooty, the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is one of the oldest wildlife reserves in India and part of the extraordinary Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that connects Mudumalai with Bandipur, Nagarhole, and Wayanad one of the largest protected forest corridors in Asia. The reserve is home to tigers, elephants, leopards, gaur, sambar, chital, dhole (Indian wild dog), and an extraordinary variety of birds. Jeep safaris and elephant safaris into the buffer zone offer genuine wildlife encounters in a landscape of great natural beauty. Mudumalai is best visited as a full-day excursion from Ooty or as an overnight extension, and our packages cover both options.
Pykara Lake & Falls
Located approximately 21 km from Ooty on the Mysuru road, Pykara is a beautiful reservoir surrounded by shola forest and grassland a peaceful destination for boating, picnicking, and enjoying the quieter side of the Nilgiri landscape. The Pykara Falls nearby, where the Pykara River tumbles over a series of steps through forested gorges, is one of the finest waterfall experiences in the Nilgiris. The boat ride on Pykara Lake with the surrounding shola forest reflected in the still water is one of Ooty's finest understated pleasures.
Rose Garden
One of India's largest rose gardens, the Government Rose Garden in Ooty's Vijayanagaram area covers more than four acres of hillside terraces planted with over 20,000 rose plants in 2,200 varieties. The garden is maintained to an impressive standard and is at its most spectacular from April to June when the roses are in full bloom. The terraced layout offers excellent views over the Ooty valley, and the fragrance of the garden on a still morning is genuinely extraordinary.
Pine Forest
A dense plantation of pine trees approximately 7 km from Ooty town, the Pine Forest (also known as Singara Forest) is one of the most popular picnic destinations near Ooty and one of the finest photo locations. The tall, straight pine columns rise from a carpet of dry needles and the filtered light through the canopy creates beautiful photographic conditions. The forest is quiet in the early morning and at weekends becomes popular with local picnickers.

Best Time to Visit Ooty
Summer (April to June): The most popular season, when travellers from the South Indian plains seek relief in the Nilgiri cool. The landscape is spectacularly lush and green, the waterfalls are at their most powerful, and the mist in the tea estates is hauntingly beautiful. Road conditions can occasionally be affected. A distinctly atmospheric time for those who enjoy the drama of the monsoon hills.
Autumn (October to November): One of the finest seasons the monsoon has cleared, the hills are vividly green, the skies are clear, and the temperatures are perfect (12°C to 22°C). Crowds are significantly thinner than summer. Strongly recommended.
Winter (December to March): Cool to cold (7°C to 20°C), with clear mornings and occasional fog. The tea estates are at their most productive (the finest Nilgiri tea is picked in December and January). A beautiful, quiet time to visit Ooty, with the town at its most peaceful.
